Ancient Sites

As we take a more educated look into remaining ancient sites & places on our planet, we find our instinctual, more-deeply-rooted intelligence giving us clues to our connection with the everything.

Unhindered by a mind heavily involved with the work of accepting and rejecting information and an intelligence deeply-scattered by trust issues, the ancient person would have had all possibility to immerse themselves in the all-that-is and applied wisdom. Of course, life on this planet of temporariness and death can never bring an absolute peacefulness, but relative to our experience, theirs would certainly have been more immersive.

There has been a ton of speculation around what the purpose of these sites was; astronomical observatories, gathering places for tribal festivals and ritual and many more ideas, but my take on them is that they were places of gathering and rituals on the wheel of the year, where people could come and immerse themselves in asking the question, ‘How does our experience here of bringing children into the world, securing food and water to sustain us and experiencing conflict relate to you, the huge vast horizon of eternity with all your variegatedness and beauty? what is the connection between us and you? you are the strength of eternal mother and eternal father – please protect us & guide us!

The movements of the shining celestials were noted year after year after year until their paths and cycles become clear. Then stone structures were erected to connect the movements with the lives of the people and the people would gather at certain times to see the movement of the bright luminaries in the defined boundaries of correctly-aligned standing stones. I can just imagine that at such times, those people would have felt a strong sense of belonging to the eternal vastness and it’s mysterious life force.

Is that not the same strong desire to feel connection with eternity as we feel, even in our dissociated and impersonal world?

Fasting

Wow! I just said ‘fasting’ and everyone quickly got up and ran out of the room! Why? because the last thing that we want to do is an act of austerity that has the potential to make us feel sad/depleted/on the losing end! In our imaginations at least!

But! the act of fasting is an ancient art and well-respected for it’s ability to revive and restimulate the entire body and it’s energy systems. We discover over time, especially when we fit fasting into our calendars, that we become lighter, happier, more agile. less likely to procrastinate and waste time, better able to have healthy relationships with significant others and so on. So, how can that be?

Fasting engages powerful biological mechanisms that influence metabolism, cellular repair, and overall health.
Fasting stimulates autophagy, a natural process where cells remove damaged proteins and dysfunctional organelles. This helps prevent cellular aging, neurodegenerative diseases, and even cancer by maintaining internal cellular balance and repair mechanisms.
Ketones and autophagy contribute to neuroprotection. Studies show fasting can enhance cognitive function, memory, and focus. It may increase BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) — a protein vital for learning, mood regulation, and neuron growth.
In short: fasting is a controlled form of biological stress that trains the body to become more resilient, efficient, and self-repairing.

If an animal gets sick, you watch! it will fast! It is in that sense a hard-wired bodily response to a change in biological state. The interesting thing is that in the Vedic culture, folk used to and still do, fast on the 11th day after the New Moon and on the 11th day after the Full Moon. Twice a month. With whole populations fasting, food is spared and the people grow strong.

I fasted quite a few times as a youngster and then later on, I decided to follow the 11th day method mentioned above. The only problem was that I was quite toxic due to years of a certain lifestyle and so the fasting caused crazy headaches etc. Years later, I actually enjoy my fast days and come out of it feeling lighter and more cognitive. If you feel to take it on, just go into it gradually, one step at a time and with that bi-monthly rhythm, you will soon have found a way to stay young, fit & healthy for a whole lifetime!

Love kicks the ass of space & time!

I heard this quote the other day and it made me grin internally – what a brilliant statement!

When you really quiet down, you can begin to understand that both space and time are facilities for us to navigate our lives in this world. They are not set in stone monolithic structures. You can verify this for yourself by stopping and noticing your situation throughout the day. You will notice that time is a factor that is constantly moulding around your experience, it is changing and adapting to your consciousness. This is verified by modern science and has been accepted since ‘time began’ (LOL). The same goes for space, it is constantly adapting to your needs! Most folk accept them as immovable eternal factors, but no!

In Bhagavad Gita 18.61, Sri Krishna tells Arjuna;

īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ
hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati
bhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni
yantrārūḍhāni māyayā

The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone’s heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy.

As we wander throughout our lives and throughout the universes, we are protected by casings of a gross body and six subtle bodies. In addition, we have at hand access to the emotions, which we access in times of need such as anger when we need to establish boundaries, or fear, when we need to slow down and observe what is going on around us. We in our essence are neither the body or the mind. We are travelling in a machine; protected; all we need to do the work of becoming fully cognizant and realized beings, which we actually already are! Time and space are part of the material energy for us to utilize in this endeavour. We just have to claim it in that way! So, love is the beautiful oneness that sits on top of all material energy, hence love kicks the ass of space & time!

You never know where your next inspiration may come from!

I have always been a seeker of knowledge. It is written into my code. As a child in the 60’s, I used to observe everything and everyone with great interest. Things were externally more interesting back then in that sense. But now, as we all begin to travel within, we have so much online content and tons of information available at a click. AI has turned up to help us with this.

You may have noticed websites and posts turning up in your field of vision. Don’t think that it is all AI marketing. No! Go to the moment before that thought and wonder if it was your own intuition that brought your attention to that thing. Let it draw you in initially and if it really doesn’t resonate – back off and go somewhere else! If it does resonate, explore and you will find something that is going to lead you on your forward trajectory.

So, I wanted to tell you about a wordpress site that has recently inspired me. It is ‘Jaguarwisdom.com’. The author is Debra and she has created a site about the Tzolkin Wisdom Calendar of the Mayans. The ancient Mayans and other Mesoamerican people saw wisdom and insight in the movement of Venus in the sky. It was the only planet that had a dualistic aspect, meaning they observed her rising as a morning star and after a brief period out of vision, she emerged again as an evening star. This total transit is 520 days. The Tzolkin or innermost calendar is 260 days. 260×2=520. Other calendars existed and a few are known. Much was lost by the destructive impact of the European colonials.

When you spend time and explore the 20 days and 13 trecenas (13 day cycles), you begin to see that it is a truly holistic system, connecting us with higher consciousness. This can be compared with the Gregorian calendar, which stems from the old Babylonian tax system calendar, which some consider to be one of the main reasons behind the chaotic state of the world. Better to be in the flow than enslaved to a shambling authoritarian system.

Up to date – whatever that means!

It has been a while since I posted something up here!

This is entirely my fault – think of it like when you get an idea into your head and you just ponder on it – sometimes for ages! – and you just stare out into space – well, that is what I have been doing until now!

The last couple of times at the Quaker House have been good.  Two times we had Silvan on the piano and Gurudas and myself sitting like Val Doonican on our chairs.  Last time of course, we had our guest speaker from Croatia, Prema Murti Das and we hope that you enjoyed what he had to say.  Future events will be of assorted mood and dynamic.  That is our way of best presenting the opportunity for you to absorb yourselves in the Holy Name when you come.  Please keep on coming.  it is nothing without you!

As for the Bhagavad Gita discourses, I can say that I have learned a lot and I hope that you have too!

Friday 4th April will be the next installment which is chapter six – Sankhya Yoga

Just to recap a little on chapters four and five –  ‘Transcendental Knowledge’, chapter four, introduced us to the dynamics of the soul, God and the relationship between them.  Karma Yoga means that we give up the idea of us being the enjoyer and controller of everything and we offer everything to Krishna, the root of everything first, and we become happy, free from anxiety and self-realized.  We are used to getting instruction manuals with every gadget we buy right?, well, the Vedas are the instruction manual for life here on our dear Blue/Green planet!  and it has been passed down from an authorized line of great sages and souls to today!  completely unchanged other than small tweaks to make it relevant for the particular age in which it appears.  Krishna appeared as himself in Vrindavan, India just over 5000 years ago – he tells us that he appears whenever there is a decline in religious practice and a predominant rise in irreligion – that condition had started back then and of course it has got MUCH worse since then, but the beauty of the teachings are that by knowing the transcendental nature of the Lord and his pastimes, we can restore our lost relationship with him and return to the spiritual part of creation where life is full of eternity, knowledge and bliss and not have to take repeated births here in the material part of creation where life is temporary, full of ignorance and misery!  An offer not to be missed!  To really be successful on this path, we need to learn to love Krishna and surrender to him – be peaceful.  Three types of people can never do this – firstly, one who is ignorant – just like an animal, prefers to wallow in the dust and dirt of the world and suffer endlessly – the second type is one who is faithless – has decided that no truth exists simply because there are so many propositions offered and thirdly, the doubting soul – he can find no good in this world or in the next world and for him, there is no happiness whatsoever.  The solution is to understand our constitutional position as spirit souls – we can destroy our doubts with the weapon of knowledge and armed with yoga.

The fifth chapter, ‘Karma Yoga, action in Krishna Consciousness’, gives us many truths.  The secret of the wise man is given – he who outwardly performs all actions but inwardly renounces their fruits becomes purified by transcendental knowledge, he attains peace, detachment, forbearance, spiritual vision and bliss – think it over!  it is so simple, we can easily miss it!  There are three yogis – one has controlled his senses, one has controlled his mind and one has controlled his intelligence – who is the best situated? – he who has controlled his intelligence is the best – think it over!  We should know that happiness comes from within our hearts and not from external things – like an iceberg in the ocean – it may seem like it is huge and this can be compared to all the allurements of the world – money, sex, power and prestige, but look below the surface – it is even more gigantic!  and this is the happiness within the heart – just waiting to be discovered!   Is it not very difficult to find this happiness? – well, the fish brings up its offspring just by looking at them and the tortoise after laying its eggs in the sand, goes to the ocean and meditates on the eggs from there.  Similarly, the devotee in Krishna Consciousness, although far away from the Lord’s abode can elevate himself toward that abode simply by thinking of him constantly – think it over!

Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday! – be happy!

Karma Yoga – Bhagavad Gita

Image

Bg 3.1  — Arjuna said: O Janārdana, O Keśava, why do You want to engage me in this ghastly warfare, if You think that intelligence is better than fruitive work?

Bg 3.2 — My intelligence is bewildered by Your equivocal instructions. Therefore, please tell me decisively which will be most beneficial for me.
Bg 3.3 — The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O sinless Arjuna, I have already explained that there are two classes of men who try to realize the self. Some are inclined to understand it by empirical, philosophical speculation, and others by devotional service.
Bg 3.4 — Not by merely abstaining from work can one achieve freedom from reaction, nor by renunciation alone can one attain perfection.
Bg 3.5 — Everyone is forced to act helplessly according to the qualities he has acquired from the modes of material nature; therefore no one can refrain from doing something, not even for a moment.
Bg 3.6 — One who restrains the senses of action but whose mind dwells on sense objects certainly deludes himself and is called a pretender.
Bg 3.7 — On the other hand, if a sincere person tries to control the active senses by the mind and begins karma-yoga [in Kṛṣṇa consciousness] without attachment, he is by far superior.
Bg 3.8 — Perform your prescribed duty, for doing so is better than not working. One cannot even maintain one’s physical body without work.
Bg 3.9 — Work done as a sacrifice for Viṣṇu has to be performed; otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kuntī, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage.
Bg 3.10 — In the beginning of creation, the Lord of all creatures sent forth generations of men and demigods, along with sacrifices for Viṣṇu, and blessed them by saying, “Be thou happy by this yajña [sacrifice] because its performance will bestow upon you everything desirable for living happily and achieving liberation.”
Bg 3.11 — The demigods, being pleased by sacrifices, will also please you, and thus, by cooperation between men and demigods, prosperity will reign for all.
Bg 3.12 — In charge of the various necessities of life, the demigods, being satisfied by the performance of yajña [sacrifice], will supply all necessities to you. But he who enjoys such gifts without offering them to the demigods in return is certainly a thief.
Bg 3.13 — The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin.
Bg 3.14 — All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance of yajña [sacrifice], and yajña is born of prescribed duties.
Bg 3.15 — Regulated activities are prescribed in the Vedas, and the Vedas are directly manifested from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Consequently the all-pervading Transcendence is eternally situated in acts of sacrifice.
Bg 3.16 — My dear Arjuna, one who does not follow in human life the cycle of sacrifice thus established by the Vedas certainly leads a life full of sin. Living only for the satisfaction of the senses, such a person lives in vain.
Bg 3.17 — But for one who takes pleasure in the Self, whose human life is one of self-realization, and who is satisfied in the Self only, fully satiated – for him there is no duty.
Bg 3.18 — A self-realized man has no purpose to fulfill in the discharge of his prescribed duties, nor has he any reason not to perform such work. Nor has he any need to depend on any other living being.
Bg 3.19 — Therefore, without being attached to the fruits of activities, one should act as a matter of duty, for by working without attachment one attains the Supreme.
Bg 3.20 — Kings such as Janaka attained perfection solely by performance of prescribed duties. Therefore, just for the sake of educating the people in general, you should perform your work.
Bg 3.21 — Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues.
Bg 3.22 — O son of Pṛthā, there is no work prescribed for Me within all the three planetary systems. Nor am I in want of anything, nor have I a need to obtain anything – and yet I am engaged in prescribed duties.
Bg 3.23 — For if I ever failed to engage in carefully performing prescribed duties, O Pārtha, certainly all men would follow My path.
Bg 3.24 — If I did not perform prescribed duties, all these worlds would be put to ruination. I would be the cause of creating unwanted population, and I would thereby destroy the peace of all living beings.
Bg 3.25 — As the ignorant perform their duties with attachment to results, the learned may similarly act, but without attachment, for the sake of leading people on the right path.
Bg 3.26 — So as not to disrupt the minds of ignorant men attached to the fruitive results of prescribed duties, a learned person should not induce them to stop work. Rather, by working in the spirit of devotion, he should engage them in all sorts of activities [for the gradual development of Kṛṣṇa consciousness].
Bg 3.27 — The spirit soul bewildered by the influence of false ego thinks himself the doer of activities that are in actuality carried out by the three modes of material nature.
Bg 3.28 — One who is in knowledge of the Absolute Truth, O mighty-armed, does not engage himself in the senses and sense gratification, knowing well the differences between work in devotion and work for fruitive results.
Bg 3.29 — Bewildered by the modes of material nature, the ignorant fully engage themselves in material activities and become attached. But the wise should not unsettle them, although these duties are inferior due to the performers’ lack of knowledge.
Bg 3.30 — Therefore, O Arjuna, surrendering all your works unto Me, with full knowledge of Me, without desires for profit, with no claims to proprietorship, and free from lethargy, fight.
Bg 3.31 — Those persons who execute their duties according to My injunctions and who follow this teaching faithfully, without envy, become free from the bondage of fruitive actions.
Bg 3.32 — But those who, out of envy, disregard these teachings and do not follow them regularly are to be considered bereft of all knowledge, befooled, and ruined in their endeavors for perfection.
Bg 3.33 — Even a man of knowledge acts according to his own nature, for everyone follows the nature he has acquired from the three modes. What can repression accomplish?
Bg 3.34 — There are principles to regulate attachment and aversion pertaining to the senses and their objects. One should not come under the control of such attachment and aversion, because they are stumbling blocks on the path of self-realization.
Bg 3.35 — It is far better to discharge one’s prescribed duties, even though faultily, than another’s duties perfectly. Destruction in the course of performing one’s own duty is better than engaging in another’s duties, for to follow another’s path is dangerous.
Bg 3.36 — Arjuna said: O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, by what is one impelled to sinful acts, even unwillingly, as if engaged by force?
Bg 3.37 — The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world.
Bg 3.38 — As fire is covered by smoke, as a mirror is covered by dust, or as the embryo is covered by the womb, the living entity is similarly covered by different degrees of this lust.
Bg 3.39 — Thus the wise living entity’s pure consciousness becomes covered by his eternal enemy in the form of lust, which is never satisfied and which burns like fire.
Bg 3.40 — The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this lust. Through them lust covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him.
Bg 3.41 — Therefore, O Arjuna, best of the Bhāratas, in the very beginning curb this great symbol of sin [lust] by regulating the senses, and slay this destroyer of knowledge and self-realization.
Bg 3.42 — The working senses are superior to dull matter; mind is higher than the senses; intelligence is still higher than the mind; and he [the soul] is even higher than the intelligence.
Bg 3.43 — Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material senses, mind and intelligence, O mighty-armed Arjuna, one should steady the mind by deliberate spiritual intelligence [Kṛṣṇa consciousness] and thus – by spiritual strength – conquer this insatiable enemy known as lust.
